CHAPTER FIVE

Jade pulled the nylon strap of her blue backpack higher on her shoulder as she trudged up the steps to Trish’s cabin. Darkness had long since fallen while she’d lain in Killion’s arms, losing herself in his embrace and trying like hell to blot out what was coming. But, as it always had, time had caught them and now she had no choice but to do her duty to the pack. Knocking softly on the door, she waited. Trish would be up and ready but she wasn’t sure about Hershel. Although morning wouldn’t break for several hours, she didn’t know if Hershel got up with her when Trish had the early morning/late night runs or if he slept in. She’d bet her last jar of chocolate fudge frosting that he stayed in bed. The few times she’d been around him, he hadn’t seemed like the caring sort.

Not like Killion.

No, he was nothing like Killion. The way he treated her friend made her long to grab him around the throat and shake him until he realized how fortunate he was to have found someone like Trish. But she couldn’t. If Trish was happy, then she had to be happy for her. She couldn’t put her paw on it, but for some reason other than his selfish attitude, she couldn’t quite feel comfortable with her best friend’s intended. Not that she’d ever let Trish know. She’d never hurt her like that. Besides, she now had a shitload of her own problems to worry about.

She was both hyper and tired, not to mention scared and angry. Just a few hours ago, she’d been claimed by Killion as his true mate—something she’d longed after for over two years. Now, she’d give anything—even the tiny scar that finally gave proof to her place in his life—if things could just go back to the way they were the day before. When the time had come for Killion to depart on his assigned run, she’d almost asked him again to leave with her instead. Even though she knew they’d be on the run for the rest of their lives, constantly looking over their shoulder, it was a chance she was willing to take if it meant that Killion would be safe. Alive.

But now that he’d claimed her, she was truly connected to him. His thoughts, though she wasn’t going to intrude, were transparent. He felt he deserved to answer for Peggy’s death and he was brave enough to stand up before his pack and Alpha Daewood and take his punishment like the protector wolf he was. That alone had kept her from begging, even when a messenger arrived just before Killion left with the summons that he was to go directly to the convention hall for a meeting with the alpha once he returned from his run.

Even the thought of taking Skeeter to the outcroppings didn’t creep her out the way it had yesterday morning. Now it was simply something she wanted to get done so she could get back to the compound.
